Liposuction surgery is generally regarded as a very safe procedure but that doesn’t guarantee that there is no such thing as liposuction side effects. Most of the problems are a result of improper post-surgery clean-up practice that could have been avoided. The good news is that the majority of these complications are temporary and non-lethal.

The most common problem is the discoloration of the skin known as hematomas and seromas. This occurs when blood leaking from damaged blood vessels pool underneath the skin causing dark spots to appear. Proper drainage of the treated area would have reduced the chances or the severity of such occurrences. The discoloration usually goes away after several months but in severe cases can last several years.

Skin irregularities are probably one of the worse non-serious side effects because of its lasting effect on the patient. This happens when too many fat cells are removed from one area leaving the skin to appear lumpy and uneven. It can be avoided by removing small amounts over several sessions.

When the area is not properly drained the fluids that build up can cause swelling in lower parts of the body due to the simple principles of gravity. This is only a potential problem when major areas such as the abdomen have been treated. The fluid flows down and causes the feet and ankles to swell. It can be a scary experience for most patients but this side effect is fortunately only temporary.

Other possible complications come from the administration of anesthesia and the specific chemicals contained in the solution. Epinephrine causes the heart rate to elevate during the surgery as well as for a temporary period of time after the surgery as it slowly wears off. The patient is will be advised by the doctor to avoid any caffeine or drugs containing epinephrine-like chemicals such as cold medications for a few days before the date of the surgery.

Many of the side effects of liposuction can be reduced by proper drainage of the treated area before it is closed up. Laser liposuction is a method of liposuction that uses smaller tools to treat smaller areas which in turn greatly reduces or even eliminates some of the common side effects of traditional liposuction.
